We normally complain about it, and most of the time we decide it is the manufacturer´s fault.

Fact is, cell phone technology has grown rapidly over the past 4-5 years, but battery technology just hasn’t kept pace. Cell phones use lithium-ion batteries with a normal lifespan of 2-3 years. They are efficient power sources and often last a couple days when fully charged.

If we recall 2003, it wasn’t uncommon to find cell phones that gave just 1 hr of talktime with a standby time of under 24 hrs, forcing us to recharge every night, overnight. These days, despite all the processing power involved, we can expect the typical Nokia or Sony cell phone to last much longer than that — Say 4-6 hrs of talktime and 2-3 days of standby time. Now, why do we get a real 50-75% of that? This is why.

We must take into consideration that manufacturers test the phone for calling and sms only when it comes to battery life, they do NOT publish the battery life when using many applications. So, battery life is tested only for the basic uses of the phone.
Under “normal” usage circumstances, however, we do a lot more than that. Here are 8 of the things that a cell phone tends to engage in on a real-world basis:

1. Bluetooth on most phones having it is almost always on.
2. We’ve got multiple applications running in the foreground and background - even those we’re not using.
3. Emails are being sent and the Internet is being browsed.
4. The brightness of our phone screen is set to high by default.

6. For travelers and business users on roaming, the phone is constantly locating a signal — which eats into precious battery time like no one’s business.
7. We tend to overcharge our battery by keeping it plugged in for over 24 hrs, or the opposite — completely discharge the battery before recharging it again.
8. Lastly (and more commonly), our phone is continually exposed to heat, cold, dust, rain, oil fumes, shocks and vibrations, including accidental drops on a hard floor.

So just what are Ringback Tones In simple terms, when you call someone you usually will hear a beep letting you know that you have been connected and the phone is ringing - this is the ringback tone.

A more technical explanation is that the ringback tone is a status indication that the number dialed is available (ie the receiving line is in service and not busy). This requires that the proper connections through the network or networks between the caller and the callee’s audio devices are either made, or are available to be made, and the phone call will be connected if the call is picked up - either by an answering service or a person.

Once the receiving party has either answered your call, or you call was picked up by an answering machine or network voice service, the ringback tone stops. (awwww). The actual sound of a ringback tone will depend on your country and/or carrier. Again, to get technical, in North America (United States and Canada), which are within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), the standard PSTN ringback tone is generated by summing a 440-Hz tone with a 480-Hz tone and applying these to the telephone line in a two-second on and four-second off pattern.

The interference due to the difference in frequency between the two tones causes a 40-Hz beat, and the tone combination produces the common warbling “ring … ring … ring” sound. The ringback tone may be generated by the switch serving either the called party or the calling party, but it is not generated by the called telephone instrument or PBX. The ringback tone generally starts and stops at the same rate as the ringing tone of the called telephone, but generally is out of phase, i.e., staggered in time.

Finally we get to the fun part about ringback tones - rather than the standard ‘ring ring’ tone we just talked about above, cellphone carriers have made it possible to personalize the ringback tone that your cellphone service will play when a caller is waiting for you or your machine to pickup. A huge selection of current (as well as classic) music and audio clips are available for selection on your cellphone to play as the ringback tone. Customizing your ringback tones in this manner is available through subscription services with your particular carrier, and is generally billed as an additional charge per tone selected.

The best thing about ringback tones is that you can customize the tone played depending on the caller - it is possible to select up to 100 or so active ringback tones at any given time, each programmed so that different callers hear different tones/songs/clips, or programmed so that different tones will play dependent on the time of day.
